A Brief History of the NABSE/NABSEF
Youth Leadership Summits
The Youth Leadership Summits is a signature program of the National Alliance of Black School Educators Foundation (NABSE Foundation)) that was developed in 2006 under the leadership of then NABSE President Dr. Emma L. Marshall Epps designed with Activities that would Mentor, Educate and Nurture (M.E.N.) African American young males with the goal of helping them become productive, positive adults. In 2018, the Inspire Project (I.N.S.P.I.R.E.) designed to Inform, Support, Prepare, Inspire, Reward and Empower young females was introduced. This national leadership summit supports NABSE’s #1 Six Big Priorities, “Student Achievement, Early Childhood, Literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.” Over the past 13 years, hundreds of students have participated in the Youth Leadership Summits. These youth participants have been motivated to go back to their respective schools and communities to serve as student leaders. In addition, the Summits have increased participants’ interest in attending postsecondary institutions. During the 3-day Summit, youth participate in interactive workshops designed to help provide a life changing weekend of life skills activities for these students in grades 8-10. Also included are tours of local college campuses, museums and other cultural activities. Workshop session leaders, speakers, chaperones/big brothers/big sisters and dorm monitors are NABSE professional men and women from all aspects of our society including superintendents, principals, CEOs, professors, judges, pastors and community leaders who volunteer their time and pay their own expenses. In 2022 successful male and female Youth Leadership Summits were held at Bowie State University, Bowie, Maryland, for 87 youth. In 2019 the female Summit was held at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and the male Summit was held at Paul Quinn College, Dallas Texas. Previous Summits have been held in Washington, D.C and Detroit, Michigan, and at Prairie View University, Kentucky State University and Xavier University of New Orleans. This effort to uplift and increase the knowledge and awareness of black teens is vital to the growth and development of both our society and nation. This worthwhile event will lead to the success of black teen leaders as they assume future leadership responsibilities in our changing and tumultuous society. The 2023 NABSE Foundation Youth Leadership Summit was held July 6-9, 2023, on the campus of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. More than 100 youths were in attendance.
